Windjammer: The Balloon Automaton
Introduced at Artsplosure in Raleigh, NC, in 1990, Windjammer became an instant hit with event planners, children, and parents.
The automaton was broken in 1999 at a festival and is now finally restored and available once again. As the photos show, Windjammer is scaled to be eye to eye with a child; the extended hand is gloved and feels "real" to the person shaking it.
Simply put, a child shakes Windjammer's extended hand and pumps up a balloon, and then Alberti sculpts it into an animal, a toy, a flower, or even a hat. The children are active participants throughout the process. They chose which color balloon they want, blow up the balloon themselves by shaking Windjammer's hand, and choose from Alberti's repertoire of balloon sculptures.
